Behind every good man stands . . in the case of the Power List’s No. 1 Dame Patsy Reddy, Sir David Gascoigne, a significant legal power in his own right – a powerful ‘Denis’ to Dame Patsy’s Margaret Thatcher.
While Sir David may now be taking a seat behind the leading lady, his own significant accomplishments in and beyond the law ensure that his influence upon his wife and in general is by no means insignificant.
Almost moments before Dame Patsy was named Governor General (March 22), she married Sir David (March 14) at their Wairarapa estate, since sold to neighbour movie director James Cameron. Perhaps a sense of Olde World propriety saw the high profile couple seal the deal prior to Dame Patsy taking her top role.
Sir David was divorced in 1989 and Dame Patsy, previously married to tax barrister Dr Geoff Harley, in 1988.
The power couple with strong interests in the arts both have accomplished careers, with Sir David working previously as Chairman of his former firm, Watts & Patterson (now MinterEllisonRuddWatts) as well as chair of the Film Commission and as Judicial Conduct Commissioner.
He has also been involved with the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council, National Arts Gallery, NZ Festival of the Arts and NZ Film Production Trust, Chair of the Rugby World Cup 2011 Bid Advisory Committee and performed advisory work for NZ Rugby.
